If you drive to the north of the Peak District National Park it will have become the Dark Peak due to the grit stone rock deposits and moor land, here you will find the ‘dams’ namely Ladybower, Derwent and Howden. Two complete villages, Derwent and Ashopton, were lost due to their construction, though now picturesque in their own right. Derwent dam was used during WW2 to train Lancaster bomber crews for the dropping of the famous ‘bouncing bomb’.
